More about Indian Railways
The first railway in India ran for 21 miles between Bombay and Thane. George Clark, Chief Engineer of the Bombay Government and the first person to have the idea of building a railway connecting Bombay to Thane, Kalyan.
On 16th April 1853, 14 railway carriages with 400 guests aboard left Bori Bunder around 3.30 pm “to the applause and salute of a large crowd.” On 15th August 1854, the first passenger train left Howrah Station bound for Hooghly. This distance was 24 miles. The first section of the East Indian Railway opened for public traffic on 15th August 1854, marking the beginning of rail transport in the Eastern part of the subcontinent.
Madras Railway Company opened the first line in the south. The first line was opened by the Madras Railway Company on Ist July 1856. It connected Vyasarpadi Jeeva Nilayam, Veyasarpandy to Walajah Road, Arcot. This distance is 63 miles. On 19th October 1875, the first section of Hathras Road from Mathura Cantonment to Hathras Road was opened for the public.
This was the beginning of a small network that eventually spread across the entire country. In 1880, the Indian Railway System had approximately 9000 miles of route. INDIAN RAILWAYS is the leading transport organization in the country. It has the second-largest rail network under one management in the world and the largest railways network in Asia.
